Today’s question stems from a quote by the German theologian Paul Tillich:
“Doubt isn’t the opposite of faith. It is an element of faith.“
There are those who seem to think that one must be completely certain about everything in order to believe or act; however, I would ask…
If there is no doubt, can there be faith?
An interesting question: I believe the scripture refers to faith as the substance of things hoped for. If we hope: there has to be the element of uncertainty because who would hope for what we have. If we conclude that doubt can be seen as uncertainty while holding to our faith, then perhaps we can meet people of uncertain faith with compassion, and fellowship. It will probably save us from arrogance which has often accompanied the church to its worse moments in history. Uncle Les
